Fuenteovejuna is a historical play by Lope de Vega based on the 1476 uprising of the villagers of Fuenteovejuna against their tyrannical Commander, Fernán Gómez de Guzmán. After repeated abuses, including sexual assault, and particularly the Commander's attempt to violate the mayor's daughter Laurencia on her wedding day, the villagers collectively murder him in an act of rebellion. When the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, send investigators to punish the perpetrators, the entire village unifies and claims to have committed the act, leading the monarchs to pardon them in recognition of their unified loyalty to the crown.
